So don’t get excited that Republicans are talking immigration reform now. Here is the game they have been waiting till this election year to play – come up with immigration reform that is tough on border security and only provides legal status NOT a path to citizenship!!! Yes, they will argue that after you pass all the law’s hurdles that an immigrant can then apply for a green card. This however, is next to impossible as they calculate would happen for very few. For example, just one of many requirements just to be legal is to prove you have income and are not talking any government benefits like welfare. Latino, as you know, most of the undocumented can barely make it; many holding two or three jobs!!! This one requirement will deny full legalization to most. So the game is offer this and if the Democrats don’t vote for that wanting instead full citizenship rights then the Republicans can say they tried and blame no immigration on Obama even though he has been fighting for Latinos all these years. The Right is hoping enough Latinos will just jump for “legalization” as better than no progress. So it’s a game – they don’t care – either way the undocumented still work for cheap for the big businesses like fast foods, hotels, and construction and for sure do not get to vote!!!! Speaker Boehner said “The blueprint supports legal status for undocumented immigrants, which is already further than many conservatives want to go. If Democrats demand the promise of citizenship for people living in the U.S. illegally, as the bill passed by the Senate would do, the Speaker said the House would block reform.” The Senate passed a bill 7 months ago and the House has refused to act. Now they come up with some crazy scheme all for the wrong reasons. We can craft responsible immigration reform to include reliable border security but that would mean passing a bill with mostly democratic votes as most of the Right-wing base led by their Right-wing hate radio folks and the Tea party will not ever go for it. So much hate from the party that also claims religion. Where do you ask is Rubio? Hiding. As always back peddling on the issues – blaming Obama – ready to take credit for what he will not stand for. Just read this article. For progressives, this is a call to fight this plan. How in the world can we, the United States of America accept having a permanent underclass of Americans? Would we even call them Americans or just legalized foreigners? MAE M. NGAI says it best in a NY Times op-ed, “Citizenship is precious. That is precisely why it shouldn’t be held hostage to narrow, defeatist and racially discriminatory partisan interests.” Saludos, The Progressive Latino.
